Beach Clean Up on Earth Day

Earth Day is next weekend. Have you thought about what you can do to help the environment? Long Island consists of over 1600 miles of coastline, 1200 in Suffolk and Nassau alone. One of Long Island’s appeals is the beaches during the beautiful Spring and Summer months. Lets start the season off right by doing our part, participating in a beach cleanup this weekend.

Here is a list of a few cleanups going on this Earth Day and through the Spring and Summer:
Friends of the Bay – Oyster Bay / Cold Spring Harbor spring cleanup
Saturday, April 22, 8:00AM – 12:00PM.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation
They conduct beach clean-ups once a month at several different locations around Long Island. The clean-ups are held the first Saturday of each month from 10 am – 12 pm. The next confirmed date is 5/6/17. Cleanup sites include: Cedar Beach, Mount Sinai, Fire Island Wilderness visitors Center, Shirley, Crab Meadow Beach, Huntington, Ponquogue Beach, Hampton Bays, Roanoke Beach and Riverhead. Earth Day Larchmont Reservoir Cleanup Celebrate Earth Day
Celebrate with the whole family by participating in a cleanup at the Larchmont Reservoir Conservancy.

Town of Mamaroneck Spring Cleanup Hommocks Conservation Area
Saturday, April 22, 2017 – Earth Day! From 10AM to Noon. Meet at the Hommocks Conservation Area parking lot on Hommocks Road.
Please wear long pants, sneakers, and boots (no open-toed shoes!) and bring bug spray. We will supply bags, water, snacks and gloves.

Surfrider ELI ~ Earth Day Beach Clean Up
Please join us and help clean-up the Tiana Beach area followed by a celebration of volunteerism & stewardship.
1:00 pm Meet at the bayside of Tiana Beach, sign in & recieve your celebration braclet (this will gain you access to the food offering, drink specials, and 2 free raffle tickets)
1:00-4:00pm Clean-up.. please be sure to wear protective shoes, re-usable & washable gloves, and to protect yourself from ticks
7:00-9:00pm Please join us at 78 Foster Ave Restaraunt and Bar for a casual gathering with a light offering of foods, $1.00 off draft and house wines, and chances to purchace raffle/auction tickets for local goods and art work.
8:30pm -? Live music by Undercover ( Sherman Kearns, Dennis Metzler, Nick Kerzner, & Pete Smith)
9:00pm raffle/auction winners announced

Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve Earth Day Cleanup
Join us for a walk along the beautiful shore of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve! Celebrate Earth Day as we make the park a cleaner place with a beach clean-up. No fee. Saturday, April 22, 2017 11:00 AM – 01:00 PM

Check with your local town website to see if there is an event going on near you or if you want to do your part at your own favorite beach here is a quick list of items you will need:

  • Trash bags
  • Protective gloves
  • Closed toe shoes (Boots preferred)
  • First aid kit
  • Water
